Animal stories -chickens

Animals fascinate babies and children and stories about them are popular. They are great for teaching children many things through watching, listening, touching and smelling. The story can be very simple for a toddler or a complex information procedure for an older child.

This simple rhyme can be used as a story for toddlers. Use felt pieces or toys as shown here.

Mother Hen

Counting eggs in a nest 1,2,3, (have eggs in the nest on top of chickens so chicks are hidden)

Mother hen keeps them warm (place the hen on the eggs)

Warm as can be.(peep at the eggs)

Crack, crackle, pop (clap softly then louder for the eggs to hatch)

Now we can see (remove the hen then the eggs to reveal the chicks)

Three fluffy chicks (count the chicks again)

Yellow as can be.

Henny Penny’s Gift

Hens are interesting pets. A member of my family has hens and when one hen went missing everyone was concerned. However, three weeks later she reappeared during a thunder storm, leading seven chickens. Those chickens have been a delight to the family. My granddaughter has visited often to hold them, play with them, and now to lead them out into the garden. In one more week they’ll be joining the hens, but will remain quiet and friendly because they have been handled daily.

Can you make a story for the older preschool children about a hen like that? Raising chickens in an incubator is also possible with preschoolers.

Teaching chickens

These chickens, raised in an incubator at an early childhood centre, gave the children lots of pleasure and opportunities to learn.
