It is Reconciliation Week and a great time to tell stories from Aboriginal culture to all Australian children. Many wonderful stories come from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and there are really attractive books available that children from all backgrounds will enjoy. Some books, like the Budburra publications are illustrated by Aboriginal children. One of my favourites is
Budburr'a Garden. Another of their publications illustrated by Aboriginal children, is
Dingoes are Not Dogs. It can be used as a reconciliation story, showing how people as well as animals may be different in some ways but the same in many other ways.
Authors Alison Lester and her friend Elizabeth Honey, worked with Aboriginal and Islander children one year. to produce the books.Ernie Dances to the Didgeridoo and Our Island. These are excellent books to have in your library.
