Bushfire Disasters

Everyone is sad about the catastrophic fires in many parts of Australia this summer. Fires have been burning for five months in some areas and billions of hectares of land have been wrecked and more than 1,800 homes have been destroyed. Never before has this country been so devastated. Help is coming from across the world and the generosity of people is magnificent, but can our country recover? Will some species of our unique animals now be extinct? What are the best ways to help those people affected by the fires?

Initially those who lost their homes and all their possessions needed food clothing and shelter and this was provided in abundance, but now money is the best way to help.

Here are links to the most important relief organizations:

It’s been estimated that around 1.25 billion animals have been killed across Australia to date. This includes thousands of koalas and other iconic species such as kangaroos, wallabies, kookaburras, cockatoos and honeyeaters burnt alive, and many thousands more injured and homeless. The numbers of creatures killed is mind-boggling. It makes me think of the extinction of the dinosaurs, but this is in our lifetime and we need to do everything possible to prevent this extinction.

Wildlife carers with special training are very busy attending to injured creatures, but many other people will come across injured animals at this time. Here is a link with important information of what we should do if we find an injured animal
