The bushfires have been devastating in so many parts of Australia with loss of life, loss of homes and businesses, loss of schools and loss of animals. This picture is a small part of bush land dear to my family. Our little holiday cottage was saved by the wonderful skills of the fire fighters and when rain finally comes, most of these trees will regenerate. However, the summer hasn't started yet and the threat of fire will continue for months and towns and villages in rural areas will remain at risk. This area wasn't park-like where one could walk leisurely between the trees, It had shrubs and tussocks and grass for wildlife and cattle. It is now completely different and depending on the climate, will take a long time to recover. I wonder what happened to the animals? What will they eat now?
A few days ago there was rain and everyone rejoiced and our hope is for more. No one can escape the effects of this drought as gardens die and many trees die too. The heritage trees in town are dying too as water resources have to be saved for human use. In my own garden all the plants are stressed. My grove of cassurinas looks dead.
As water is so scarce, kangaroos come to drink at a small pool even in daylight hours.
Provide water for thirsty creatures near your place and did you realize that bees and butterflies are thirsty too?
