June 6th is World Environment Day. We cannot afford to take our environment for granted;not the land , not the sea around it and not the animals either. Although we have such a varied land it is all fragile - the salt plains in the centre, the reef, the tropical rainforests, the snow country. We are lucky people to have a diverse environment but our forests and our wonderful animals are disappearing at an alarming rate. It is great news that major supermarkets will make a big effort this year to remove a lot of plastic from their products. Consumers can certainly do without most of the plastic packaging that goes onto our food. Plastic straws which are so damaging to marine life will no longer be used.

A very big concern to me is that so much land clearing is occurring and as a result many of the loved Australian native animals will become extinct or very endangered within the life span of our youngsters. The animals cannot survive if their habitats are destroyed. We are lucky to have organizations that work tirelessly to help protect our environment and our native creatures not only in Australia but throughout the world. Each of us must take responsibility too if the world is to remain a pleasant place to live. We must engage in sustainable living practices and encourage our children to minimize waste. We must stand up for whales and other creatures that can't stand up for themselves and insist that our government acts to reduce climate change and protects our natural heritage.

On World environment days I told three year olds a story about helping native animals. You can read more about it on my storytelling page.
