Here is a book that is both beautiful and informative and will get you thinking about our world. I was looking through my bookshelves and took out some books that I thought would interest my granddaughter. I’d bought this book years ago and loved the simple story and powerful art. Helen Cowcher writes books and paints pictures about endangered animals and fragile environments. She can’t always visit the environment she wants to write about and it wasn’t possible for her to visit Antarctica. Instead she researched and the result is a book that captures the atmosphere of the place and arouses the interest of children. Penguins are such fascinating and amazing creatures. At the time of writing it the World Wildlife Fund and other concerned groups were working to protect the Antarctic from mining development. Her book helped raise awareness of the importance of this environment and the penguins that live there. This book can get children thinking about how animals and people can live or work in extreme climates and environments and about the problems humans create when they move into such places.
