Summer is coming

As summer approaches we are all conscious of the climate and how it affects our activities and our environment. Drought and its effect is always not far off in Australia. The special, welcome green of spring has not appeared this season. There is still no rain on the horizon for eastern Australia and with rising temperatures and strong winds the fire season as well as drought, is underway.

Fire fighters do an amazing job protecting homes and property, but still people take risks or are not fully prepared for fire. Sometimes it is machinery such as grinders or welding equipment that sends the sparks that become a fire within seconds. Sometimes it is lack of time that has meant that grass and other rubbish become potential fuel for fires. Sometimes the remoteness of fires caused by lightning makes it impossible to deal with them and hundreds of hectares are burnt out.

Remember

  • When there is a total fire ban, don’t even light barbecues.
  • Conserve water by not washing hands or dishes under running water.
  • Water gardens in the early morning or after sunset and obey any water restrictions.
