In Australia Threatened species Day was on September 7th but we need to be constantly aware if our unique environment and creatures are to survive.More than 1,700 species including plants and eco systems such as the Shale Forest in Southern NSW, are at risk of extinction. One of the best loved animals at risk is the koala and on the so called ‘koala coast’ 80% of the koalas have been lost in the last 20 years. Other threatened animals are the Tasmanian devil, bilbies, bandicoots, the Superb Parrot and the Mahogany glider possum. What can we do to help these environments and animals?
- Keep pets such as dogs and cats under control
- Plant native species for them to eat
- Plant corridors of trees and bushes for food and protection so birds and animals can move safely from place to place
- Join a community group to clear noxious weeds and plants from bushland and along creeks
- Talk to community members and neighbours to spread the word about the need for protection
- Sign petitions to protect land from clearing
- Make donations to organizations such as the Wilderness organization https://www.wilderness.org.au/
- Support scientific surveys and research
- Find out what species are threatened in your area and find/join people who are working to save them
- Nominate at risk creatures, plants and eco systems for protection. Anyone can make a nomination to the Minister for Environment but numbers of concerned people must take act before government will take action http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/
