Make it Count Mathematics programs are implemented by clusters of schools throughout Australia and approach teaching through Indigenous culture. Dr Chris Matthews, an Aboriginal teacher, uses song and dance to get Indigenous kids to understand concepts of maths. He finds that by telling stories the students remember and understand better than when they are just trying to remember facts. The programs encourage parent participation too. Students talk about their aims, their challenges and share their stories and create stories together within the groups.
As stories are a strong part of Indigenous culture it is great to encourage their use in all aspects of school learning.
