Getting Active

I read an article about ways to get calmed down on stressful days and getting physically active was one of the top methods. Everyone has stressful days and having a number of ideas to reduce the stress is essential. Most of us probably think of meditation, mindfulness, counting to 10, taking deep breaths or sitting down with a hot drink as the best and quickest ways to get calm, but the article I read had a different approach. The amazing thing was that the article written by someone who lives in Alaska directed me to a study carried out by someone in my home town in northern NSW Australia!

The results of a study of 100 men and women aged between 18 and 80 showed that dancing the tango was more effective in relieving stress and anxiety than was meditation. The tango it seems improves health, self esteem, balance, happiness and the quality of life in general. While the tango seemed to be tops all forms of dance, even hip-hop, were also very beneficial

So how about getting everyone in your family dancing? Music of all types is readily available in our homes so when the kids are too noisy or causing you to get frazzled begin to dance. If you are a grandparent minding the kids and haven’t danced for 60 years, or a mother wondering what ‘no mess’ activity you can provide next, or a father who thinks dancing is only for girls, it can be easy. Let the kids take the lead and even if you just step left and right and turn around or jiggle and wiggle your hips the kids will be pleased, amused, everything will lighten up and you will all be relaxed within seconds.
