Last night on the ABC 7.30 Report, we were treated to a group of kids from regional NSW who were in Sydney for four days to record a CD of Christmas songs all written by Australian composers. The 51 children had been selected from Skills Workshops. The Sydney experience gave them insight into what a professional recording studio is like, how recordings are made, how to remember music quickly, what it is like to work with a real orchestra, and many more skills. Over the four days they increased their music literacy that had begun In some of the 47 workshops conducted in 52 towns throughout the state .
The workshops, conducted by Artistic Director Michelle Leonard OAM, were often in remote areas such as Bourke, Gilgandra, Baradine, Walgett, Buninyong, and Lightnhing Ridge. Each of these centres had invited more schools to join in the experiences. It is so exciting to see these children having wonderful music opportunities. This will stay with them for life. Not only their love of singing and music, but it has opened up a whole new world to them and given them confidence that will continue to grow and help them in every aspect of their lives.
